This publication was produced on the occasion of the exhibition Obstacles by Moroccan artist mounir fatmi, at the Migros Museum, Zurich, from November 15, 2003 to January 11, 2004.

Obstacles evokes awakened desire and the impossibility of satisfying it. It can be political or existential in nature, as well as aesthetic. The question of the other, external to oneself, is a permanent element in the work of mounir fatmi. Born in Morocco in 1970, Fatmi now divides his time between Paris and Tangier. Fatmi examines the role of an artist who feels alienated from his own cultural context—in this case, his own role.
