"The Blinding Light is a project by mounir fatmi whose various pieces were inspired by a miraculous scene painted by Fra Angelico. The miracle chosen by mounir fatmi is called The Healing of Deacon Justinian.

In this scene, the Arabian brothers perform a posthumous miracle when they graft on the deacon the leg of an Ethiopian man who had just been interred in Saint Peter’s cemetery.

This scene evokes the mixing of a white body with a black limb, of the living with the dead and thus questions notions of race, hybridization, and identity. To approach the representation of this event, mounir fatmi has made a series of photomontages throughout his career (the first of them dates back to 2013) with several images that show an operating room - with its technological equipment and hygiene measures - which is superimposed on this miraculous scene. In addition to a timely reflection on the idea of hybridization, this exhibition takes us to the association between the Renaissance and hypermodernity.

This temporal ellipsis that overlaps different times and spaces brings technology and anesthetics closer to a world that used to be ruled by divine miracles. mounir fatmi tries here in an unexpected way to combine spheres of belief that are often seen as antagonistic.

On the one hand, science, order, reason and concreteness; on the other, religion, and the universe of faith, the miraculous and the sacred."
