Superimposing the flag and the broom is a literal way of “bringing the state home” and metaphorically translates as getting one's home in order and tidying up.

Obviously this semiotic makeshift construction gives the work a “cross-border” position.

Along the wall, eight brooms are lined up next to each other. The brush of each broom, brought forward slightly, gives the installation an air of instability. The eight brushes form a lozenge on the ground, echoing the form of the coloured pieces of fabric placed at the top of each broom pole. The colours of the fabric are not atonal as their different compositions resemble the American, Japanese, English, French, Italian, Canadian and Russian flags. The artist strives to show how the pictorial manages to generate a self-sufficient discourse, forgetting that de facto the work feeds on an internal aesthetic. For indeed, what is a flag if not material attached to a pole bearing a nation's colours? The signified G8, associated with the play on words of the French title (the French word for broom “balai” is pronounced in the same way as “ballet”) fractures our perception of the piece and helps us to rebalance its definition. The formal and utilitarian dimensions of the flags and brooms are added to the political questions raised and the critical interpretation of power and the balances of power developing on an international scale. Thus the polyphony of the French word for broom, “balai”, which becomes “ballet” presupposes the G8's orchestration of territories. The broom is a utensil that rids the house of dirt. In sum, the flag and the broom are comparable to a metonymy and metaphor for land to be defended and taken over, for soil to be protected or cleared. There is thus a discursive symmetry between this second national skin - a geopolitical space of reference - and the broom which is representative of an intimate, secret and homely space. Superimposing the flag and the broom is a literal way of “bringing the state home” and metaphorically translates as getting one's home in order and tidying up. Obviously this semiotic makeshift construction gives the work a “cross-border” position. The territory of the piece, in formal terms, is shot through with the familiar, the local, the national and the international. The work, in its apparent erotico-virile extension completely abandons itself to the diktat of social domination and structuring. The combination of two objects is a way of allowing a mental back and forth between the public and private spheres. The intimate, the precious is thus stripped and exposed in all its colours. Doesn't this beauty of the sacred (the flag) mixed with the profane (the broom) implicitly incriminate the aestheticization of politics which has become a substitute illusion? And what if the face image of contemporary politics were, for all that, more aesthetic and more visual – more superficial and aerated? At the end of the day, what if politics – like art – became a veritable aesthetic experience in itself, contributing to the artialisation of our day to day? Consolidating his complete oeuvre in the primacy of the mental adequacy of signifieds and signifiers, mounir fatmi makes his piece “G8 – the brooms” a continuum between territory, identity, borders, history, society, politics, human relations, balances of power, object, domination, man, woman, home, intimacy, sex, life and death. It could be said that the flag is what unites men from the same territory beyond their cultural origins. It is what creates cohesion of a people, even multicultural.

In « L’art à l’état gazeux : essai sur le triomphe de l’esthétique » (“Art in a gaseous state: essay on the triumph of the aesthetic”), Yves Michaud explains that the disappearance of the work of art is from now on played out in gaseous and evanescent states, in “installations, performances and aesthetic experiences”, and no longer in the form of concrete objects, which are given religious attention in museums. Art in its gaseous state has seen a process of evaporation, coming under the category of sensitive experience. We are moving from the art of the object to the art of experience, from an art of contemplation to an art of reception.
