'' The space of the kitchen tends to elude the subject’s gaze, memory and conscience, but because of its mysterious, fleeting,

forbidden and sensual aspect, imposes and reveals itself as

an essential and fundamental element in the construction of one’s identity. ''

Studio Fatmi, August 2019

The sound compilation “Prohibited Territory” comprises several recordings made by mounir fatmi during his stays at his family house in Tangiers, as well as in the kitchens of several neighboring houses. The recordings were made in these spaces traditionally restricted to women, his mother and sisters, and forbidden to the little boy he was. They render the sounds produced by Moroccan cooking utensils and the women’s conversations about the meals to prepare.

With this compilation, mounir fatmi questions his education, his childhood memories and the organization of his social background. “Prohibited Territory”, as it returns to one of the emblematic areas of his family house, consists in an anamnesis and a dive into a past that hasn’t yet been completely buried. These sound recordings compose a partial, piecemeal and fragmented memory. They also constitute an attempt to grasp elements that tend to elude the memory and conscience of the owner of these souvenirs.

In particular, these sound pieces enable the examination of the female influence on his education. As a veritable social laboratory, the kitchen essentially comes across as a place for conversations, intense social relations that escape the power and domination of men. Even more clearly, it is a culinary laboratory, a world rich with exchanges, sensations and fragrances. The space of the kitchen tends to elude the subject’s gaze, memory and conscience, but because of its mysterious, fleeting, forbidden and sensual aspect, imposes and reveals itself as an essential and fundamental element in the construction of one’s identity. Connecting the concepts of interdiction, sensuality and desire, “Prohibited Territory” ultimately tells the story of the birth of mounir fatmi’s artistic sensitivity.
