"Ce catalogue a été réalisé à l'occasion de l'exposition « Exilés permanents » de l'artiste marocain mounir fatmi, au MAMCO de Genève, du 17 février au 10 mai 2015.
Ayant choisi de quitter le Maroc, pays où il est né et a reçu sa première formation intellectuelle, Mounir Fatmi vit depuis avec une conscience aiguë de la séparation, du déplacement et du poids de l'identité, « le pire héritage que l'on puisse recevoir ».
Selon Paul Bowles, l'un des auteurs dont Fatmi est le plus proche, mieux vaut être un voyageur qu'un touriste (qui accepte sa propre civilisation sans la remettre en question) et, au contraire, la comparer aux autres et « rejeter les éléments qui ne lui plaisent pas ».
Intitulée « Exilés permanents », l'exposition de mounir fatmi au Mamco aborde les thèmes récurrents de son œuvre : l'identité, l'histoire, le corps, le langage. Tous ces éléments parlent de l'exil, de la séparation et de l'impossibilité du langage, et expriment la difficulté de la rencontre. Comment surmonter le moment intense et crucial de la séparation, même s'il s'agit d'un choix délibéré ? Il y aura inévitablement un « avant » et un « après ».

"This catalogue was made on the occasion of the exhibition, Permanent Exiles by Moroccan artist mounir fatmi, at MAMCO, Geneva, from February 17th to May 10th, 2015.
Having chosen to leave Morocco, the country where he was born and received his first intellectual training, mounir fatmi has since lived with an acute awareness of separation, displacement and the weight of identity, ‘the worst legacy you can ever have’.
In the words of Paul Bowles — one of the authors fatmi is closest to — it is better to be a traveler than a tourist (who accepts his own civilization without question) and instead to compare it with others and ‘reject those elements he finds not to his liking’.
Entitled Permanent Exiles, mounir fatmi’s exhibition at Mamco tackles the themes that recur throughout his work: identity, history, the body, language. All these things speak of exile, separation and the impossibility of language, and express the difficulty of encounter. How to resolve the intense, crucial moment of separation, even if this is a deliberate choice? Inevitably there will be a ‘before’ and ‘after’.
