''With The Blinding Light, mounir fatmi goes even further. For him, Deacon Justinian's survival is not enough for our need of consolation from death. The Ethiopian too must survive.

It should be the angel’s white leg, the one that no one has yet thought of grafting to the Ethiopian.''

"There are lights that illuminate, and lights that blind. The light of The Angel’s Black Leg both illuminates and blinds. The Angel’s Black Leg? mounir fatmi started this work, which continues and deepens over time, with a painting by Fra Angelico entitled The healing of Deacon Justinian (1438-1440; Museo San Marco, Florence).

The subject? A posthumous miracle performed by Saints Cosmas and Damian, two twins of Arab origin, “anargyres” doctors (without money) converted to Christianity, martyred and sanctified. Deacon Justinian was losing his leg, so the two brothers grafted to him, in his sleep, the leg of an Ethiopian who had just been buried in Saint Peter's Cemetery. This is the Angel’s Black Leg. As Françoise Parfait said, “Video, a hybrid form par excellence, always cites another image.” Fra Angelico shows at once a miracle of life and one of the miracles of his painting.

With The Blinding Light, mounir fatmi goes even further. For him, Deacon Justinian's survival is not enough for our need of consolation from death. The Ethiopian too must survive. It should be the angel’s white leg, the one that no one has yet thought of grafting to the Ethiopian. Because mounir fatmi carries the profound conviction that only civilization, or rather civilizations and the exchanges between them, in full acknowledgment of each other, will allow this The Beautiful Language (from the title of another of the artist’s videos) from which we are still so far away - a language as deeply unique as it is perhaps shared.

Here, the light, in this double video projection adapted to the tiny space of the gallery invested by mounir fatmi as if it were a sanctuary, illuminates and blinds, in positive and in negative. And the negative image blinds us in such a brilliant way that we can only close our eyes on our thinking, because “That is sublime which, simply because one might think, shows a faculty of the soul beyond all measure of sense.” (Kant, Critique of the Faculty of Judging). The sublime combines beauty and its shadow. Always, it overtakes the beautiful. We could say of mounir fatmi, as Gil Pressnitzer writes about Rilke, that “he was familiar with angels knowing that the beautiful is never more than the beginning of the terrible.”
