'' Suddenly, beyond the wall that closes and encloses, the sea seems to make everything possible.

In any case in the imagination... ''

Barbara Polla, September 2017

A black & white horizontal photographic composition, « The Wall » features a seaside scene, a landscape combining land and sea. In the forefront, the flat expanse of the beach stops where a low wall stands, forming a dyke along which couples walking and embracing each other can be seen, with the exception of one solitary character in the center, squatting on the wall, back to the camera, gazing at the open sea. In the background, the line of the horizon separates the lower and upper half of the composition, the latter being a light gray expanse of cloudy skies.

« The Wall » is a questioning on the subject of relations with several levels of interpretation. The work explores the relation of man to nature, and more broadly to reality. It also looks at the relation of man to his own nature. Finally, it addresses the issues of communication, interactions between individuals and intercultural exchanges. The work offers a meditation on the structures of reality and our perceptions, which presents itself in mounir fatmi’s artistic universe as a spatial discontinuity that imposes an interruption and an obstacle forcing the elaboration of strategies to overcome it.

The wall as an architectural element stops a force, a movement, and creates a separation. A contemporary form of architecture currently in fashion that has become a symbol for protectionism, and whose merits were recently celebrated by one American president in order to get himself elected, the wall imposes its limits to movements in space, to intercultural exchanges, communication and reality in general. It belongs to a system for the prevention, restriction and limitation of forces, movement and desire. Its erection is akin to a defense reflex against nature, perceived as hostile and dangerous, against the other, the foreigner, perceived as an invader.

More broadly, the wall constitutes a trial of reality – something that brings us to touch upon the limits of our universe, of our perception of reality and our capacity to reach out to our fellow human being. Its structure beckons a dynamic interpretation of relations and dramatizes the question of relations through contrasts: black and white, land and sea or sky and land, the movement of the waves and of people in contrast with the absence of movement, the solitary character and the couples of lovers.

The photograph « The Wall » presents itself as an obstacle calling for a strategy to overcome or circumvent it – in any case a strategy of displacement. The image of the solitary individual on top of the wall is an invitation to overcome difficulties and to not submit to its blocking power. It also reminds us that attempts to reach out to the other, as to reach in to oneself or to apprehend reality in its entirety – a space offering endless possibilities and freedom – are an essentially solitary, epic and dangerous endeavor, rife with illusions and disillusions. This work is an exhortation to jump the wall, a transgressive, free and necessary gesture.
