La création sous embargo
Menuphone est un projet multimédia évolutif
qui pose la question de la création sous embargo. Et
qui invite à cette réflexion les artistes des
vingt-sept pays ayant vécu, ou vivant encore différente
sorte d’embargo. La première partie du projet
s’est déroulée pendant l’année
2001 à l’espace culture multimédia au centre
culturel le Chaplin. Qui a permis l’écriture de
plusieurs ateliers, conférences et rencontres sur le
sujet au sein du centre même, ainsi qu’auprès
des habitants de Mantes la Jolie. Cela a donné naissance
à un questionnaire et à la première maquette
du site diffusé sur la toile du réseau mondial
d’internet pendant la manifestation européenne
"les net days".
Menuphone fait suite à un travail sur le langage et
la nourriture qui met en relation la problématique
de la langue en tant qu’organe de goût et aussi
comme médium de communication. Déjà en
1998, dans la vidéo Survival signs j’aborde
le thème de la censure par la nourriture en particulier
dans les pays sous embargo, où les enfants privés
de nourriture n’atteignent pas l’âge de parler.
Aujourd’hui en Irak, un enfant de moins de 5 ans meurt
toutes les huit minutes de maladie ou de malnutrition. Les
populations civiles souffrent en dépit de la résolution
986 du conseil de sécurité de l’ONU dite
"pétrole contre nourriture". En fait depuis
des années des peuples supporte cette fatwa internationale
imposée au nom de la condamnation de leurs régimes
qu’ils n’avaient pas non plus choisi.
Le site Menuphone sera composé de plusieurs éléments.
Dans une fausse carte géographique reliera tous les
pays qui ont subi ou qui subissent encore l’embargo.
De l’Angola à Cuba, de Chypre au Soudan, du Vietnam
au Yémen.
L’espace de chaque pays sera ouvert à un ou plusieurs
artistes pour développer une œuvre qui peut regrouper,
images, son et vidéo. Les artistes choisis seront invités
à enrichir le questionnaire et à nous expliquer
comment ils vivent la création sous embargo.
En fait comment peut-on créer quand on est confronté
à la survie quotidiennement ? Qu’est ce qu’on
peut créer quand on manque de tout ? Qu’est ce
qu’on mange sous embargo ? peut-on encore créer
? devrons-nous vendre nos livres pour manger ? cèderons-nous
à ce chantage, à cette nouvelle censure ? qui
a le droit de nous affamer ? qui a le droit de nous priver
de parler ?
Tant de questions qui se posent d’elles mêmes dès
qu’on prononce le mot embargo.
Le projet Menuphone veux développer aussi une série
d’expositions sur le sujet de la création sous
embargo, dans des espaces réels, invitant les artistes
à se rencontrer et à confronter leurs œuvres.

Creation under embargo
2000/2002
Menuphone is a multimedia evolutionary project which brings
out the question of creation under embargo. The artists belonging
to the 27 countries which used to live or still live under
various forms of embargo are also led to consider this issue.
The first part of the project took place during the year 2001
at the "espace culture media" of the "centre
culturel Chaplin" (media culture room of Chaplin arts
centre). It led to the creation of several workshops, to a
series of conferences and meetings on the subject within the
centre itself and also with the inhabitants of Mantes la Jolie.
The project gave rise to a questionnaire and to the first
layout of the site broadcast on the World Wide Web during
the European event called "the Net days".
Menuphone is the follow up of a work about language and food
which connects both aspects of the tongue: an organ which
enables us to taste food while being a communication medium.
Back in 1998, in the video Survival signs, I already
tackled the idea of censorship through food, especially in
countries under embargo, where children are deprived of food
and die before they are able to speak. Today in Iraq, every
eight minutes, a child under 5 dies either of disease or because
of malnutrition. The civilian populations die in spite of
UNO Security Council's resolution 986 known as "oil against
food". In fact, some people have had to endure this international
fatwa for years, a fatwa forced on them in the name of a condemnation
of their country's regime, a regime which they did not even
choose.
The Menuphone site will be composed of several elements. A
false map will connect all the countries which either suffered
or are still suffering the effects of an embargo. From Angola
to Cuba, from Cyprus to Sudan, from Vietnam to Yemen.
The space devoted to each country will be opened to one or
several artists so that they will be able to create a work
including pictures, sounds and video recordings. The artists
who will be selected will be asked to enrich the questionnaire
and to explain to us how they experience creation under embargo.
In fact, how can one create when one is confronted daily with
one's own survival ? What can one create when one lacks everything
? What does one eat under embargo ? Can one still create ?
Shall we have to sell our books to eat ? Shall we yield to
this blackmail, to this new form of censorship ? Who has the
right to starve us? Who has the right to deprive us from the
right to speak ?
Such are the questions which arise at once as soon as the
word "embargo" is pronounced.
The Menuphone project also intends to develop a series of
exhibitions dealing with creation under embargo, exhibitions
set in actual places, while inviting the artists involved
to meet and confront their works. |
